When was the last time you sat with your children not just to teach, but to truly listen?
On the 16th of September at Wainisisili Hall in Karoko Village, I had the privilege of sitting with children and teenagers for a session on goal setting, values, and online safety. What unfolded was more than a program. It was an awakening for them, and for me.
The children spoke with a raw honesty that both surprised and humbled me. Some admitted how TikTok sometimes fills their minds with negativity. Others bravely shared about exposure to pornography, or how they give out social media passwords in relationships. Heavy truths for such young hearts but truths that needed space to be voiced.
To illustrate value, I held up a $10 note. I crumpled it, folded it, even tore it slightly. Then I asked, “How much is this still worth?” They shouted, “Ten dollars!” That opened the floor to a deep conversation. Some children believed that those born out of wedlock, raised by single parents, or scarred by abuse were worth less. My heart broke, but it was also a holy moment to remind them:
Our value never changes. No matter the scars, no matter the past, in God’s eyes every person is priceless.
The younger ones later drew their dreams many sketched farms and crops. One girl even pictured herself with a delivery truck and a boat, carrying her produce from village to village. The older ones shared visions of their futures with such courage and resilience. Their answers reminded me: children may be young, but they carry wisdom, pain, and hope beyond their years.
I also saw how much influence lies in what children watch, listen to, and surround themselves with. Music, social media, friendships these shape them in ways we cannot ignore.
But here’s what struck me most: as much as I came to teach, I left having learned. I learned the power of slowing down, of sitting on the floor with children, of listening deeply instead of rushing to advise. I learned that they don’t just need lectures; they need affirmation, guidance, and safe spaces to dream.
ππ½ My gratitude runs deep:
To the parents and guardians of Karoko, thank you for trusting me with your children.
To my parents, for your unwavering love and support.
To my friends, for prayers, encouragement, and presence
To the parents who prepared refreshments vinaka vakalevu.
To Keni, thank you for capturing these moments so beautifully.
And to Vodafone ATH Foundation’s World of Difference program, thank you for making this journey possible
My call to every parent and guardian: Sit with your children. Ask questions. Listen without judgment. You may be amazed at the struggles they face, the dreams they hold, and the wisdom they carry. They don’t just need provision they need presence.
This is just the beginning. My prayer is for more sessions like this, not only in Karoko but across many communitiesbecause every child deserves to dream big, to know their worth, and to believe their story matters.Thank You, Lord, for the grace to guide and the humility to learn. All glory back to You.
